Murphy beds (also called wall beds, fold-down beds, or hide-a-beds) store the mattress in a wall cabinet by day and drop down at night. Closed, you lose about 40 cm of depth off the wall; open, you get a proper bed. They suit NZ studios, home offices, and spare rooms. How much does a Murphy bed cost in NZ?
Four bands, depending on how much you do yourself: hardware kits a few hundred dollars (you build the cabinet); flat-pack cabinets in the low thousands; a pre-assembled cabinet with mattress in the mid thousands; a made-to-order unit with install typically $4,500 and up. Headline prices are often mechanism-only. Budget about $1,000 minimum for a real DIY build, not $499. Install may be included (Tiltaway, Wardrobes Direct, Hiddenbed) or extra (Catchers lists $600 in Auckland). Warranties run from two years (Mazon) to ten (Ward, Tiltaway).

Who sells wall beds in NZ
Specialists, not big-box stores. Tiltaway Beds (Tauranga) and Ward Manufacturing (West Auckland) are the largest NZ-made makers, both with 10-year residential warranties. Clever Bed (Tauranga) sells factory-direct with a Sleepyhead mattress. Wall Beds Online and Easy Fold cover DIY kits and flat-pack. Mazon's Hide-A-Bed is resold by Bedworld in Christchurch. Wardrobes Direct installs Elevate in Auckland; Trundler Beds sells Hiddenbed; Catchers brings in imported cabinets. Joiners can build around a bought-in mechanism if standard sizes miss your wall. Mattress sizes, cabinet depth, and the room
Use NZ mattress sizes, not AU/US/UK. Closed cabinet width is roughly mattress width plus 60-160 mm. Check your actual mattress against the cabinet, not just the size name.
Mattress sizes are the NZ standards. Cabinet figures are the ranges we see across NZ-supplied vertical (head-to-wall) wall beds.

Closed depth off the wall runs from about 315 mm on slimline models to 520 mm on the deepest, with most sitting at 370-450 mm. Horizontal (side-tilt) models swap the numbers around: expect 1880-2220 mm wide and only 1200-1650 mm tall. Mattress sizes vary by 10-20 mm between NZ manufacturers, which matters when a cabinet is built to a fixed internal size. Check your actual mattress against the cabinet spec rather than trusting the size name, and verify the exact finish and front option you are ordering.
Plan three zones: cabinet depth off the wall (about 40 cm, permanently); floor when open (about 2,150 mm for king single or double, 2,250 mm for queen or king); and wall width for the cabinet plus any side units. Ward allow 500 mm to walk past: 2.3 m room depth for a horizontal queen or vertical king single, 2.6 m for a slimline queen, 2.8 m for a standard vertical queen. Keep the swing clear of lights, fans, shelves, and windows. In a studio office, check the chair still fits with the bed up, and that you can reach a desk-front with the bed down.
Vertical (head-to-wall) is the default when wall width is tight. Horizontal or side-tilt is wider but shorter, and needs about 2.3 m depth instead of 2.8 m for a queen: use it for low ceilings, a window or heat pump on the wall, or a wide short wall. It usually costs a little more and uses more wall run.
Walls, mechanisms, and mattresses
Fix into timber studs (typically 400 mm centres behind GIB), usually L-brackets top and bottom, never plasterboard alone. Some models also bolt to the floor, which can suit apartments. Tell the supplier if the wall is steel, brick, or concrete. If you are renovating, ask for nogs at fixing height, or a recess so the cabinet sits flush. Paid installers find the framing, scribe out-of-square walls, and set spring tension. Budget at least two hours on site.
Most installed NZ beds use multi-spring mechanisms, tensioned to the mattress. Gas struts (common on DIY kits) feel smoother but wear out. Ward's electric queen ($8,995) is for accessible housing, not studios. The bed will not close on you in use; removing the mattress from a tensioned frame can snap it shut. Never unfix or strip the mattress without the installer.
Mattress thickness caps are typically 220-320 mm (Ward 280 mm / 35 kg, Mazon 300 mm, Easy Fold 320 mm). Innerspring and pocket-spring are fine; heavy latex and memory foam often are not, and can void warranty. If the supplier includes a mattress (Tiltaway Sleepyhead Hotelier, Clever Bed Wayfarer, Hiddenbed Sealy), take it. Sheets and duvet stay on; pillows usually come off. A thick winter duvet plus a max-depth mattress may stop the cabinet closing flush. These are everyday beds: NZ makers sell into motels and rest homes, with 2 to 10-year hardware warranties.
In NZ, "cabinet bed" usually means a Murphy in cabinetry (Mazon's Metro from $2,795, Ward packages). Free-standing no-drill chests are barely sold here; renters are better with a sofa bed or trundle. Other names: bookcase bed (shelves either side), desk or studio bed (fold-down desk on the front), couch bed, and tilt or tiltaway (generic, and also a brand).
Delivery and install by region
Specialists ship nationwide; region changes freight and who installs, not the range. Auckland is best served: Ward (Glendene), Wardrobes Direct, Catchers within 45 km, plus Tiltaway and Clever Bed from the Bay of Plenty. South Island install is often batched every 6-8 weeks. Complete NZ-made units typically take 4-6 weeks in production. Check lift and stair access for a 2.2 m cabinet, or use a DIY kit plus a local builder.
A wall bed wins when the room must be clear by day: studios, townhouse spare rooms, baches. Bedding stays made up, unlike a sofa bed. Trade-offs: permanent stud fixings (poor for most rentals), about 40 cm of wall depth even when folded, 4-6 week lead times, and a much higher price than a standard frame.

- How much does a Murphy bed cost in NZ?
- Hardware kits $499-$1,395 plus timber (budget about $1,000 DIY). Flat-pack cabinets about $2,400-$3,400. Pre-assembled with mattress about $2,600-$3,800. Installed made-to-order typically $4,500-$8,900, electric queen $8,995. Add $70-$550 for delivery and install by region.
- Do you need to fix a wall bed into the studs?
- Yes. Typical NZ timber framing is studs at 400 mm centres. Use L-brackets into studs, not plasterboard anchors. Floor-bolt models reduce wall damage. Tell the supplier if the wall is steel, brick, or concrete. Rentals need the landlord's written permission; most renters are better with a sofa bed.
- Can I use my own mattress, and leave the bedding on?
- If it fits the depth cap (usually 220-320 mm) and is innerspring or pocket-spring. Skip heavy latex and memory foam. Sheets and duvet stay on; pillows usually come off. Included mattresses are specified for that mechanism.
- Will a vertical wall bed fit under a 2.4 m ceiling?
- Usually, but a vertical queen or king can be about 2,245 mm tall, leaving roughly 150 mm. That is not always enough to tilt the cabinet up during install. Measure at the wall. Use a horizontal (side-tilt) model if headroom is tight.
- How much floor space do you need?
- Closed cabinet about 40 cm off the wall (315-520 mm). Open bed about 2,150-2,250 mm out. With 500 mm to walk past, Ward specify 2.3 m room depth for a horizontal queen, 2.6 m slimline queen, 2.8 m standard vertical queen.
- Can a Murphy bed close while you are in it?
- No. Body weight holds it open. The hazard is removing the mattress from a tensioned frame, which can snap shut. Never strip or unfix it without the installer.
- How long do they take, and who installs in Auckland?
- Complete NZ-made units about 4-6 weeks in production (6-8 weeks with a fitter). Kits dispatch in days to a few weeks. Auckland: Ward, Wardrobes Direct (Elevate from $4,499 installed), Catchers (+$600 within 45 km), Tiltaway and Clever Bed from Tauranga.
