Guide notes
Bed sizing in New Zealand is genuinely confusing — the NZ king is not the same as a US king, and labelling varies between retailers. If you have ever tried to move a 'king' mattress from an old house and found it would not fit the new room, you have probably already discovered this the hard way. Here is a plain-language breakdown of every bed size you will encounter in NZ stores.

Single: 92 × 188 cm. King single: 107 × 203 cm — wider and longer than a standard single, popular for older kids and teenagers. Double (also called full): 138 × 188 cm. Queen: 153 × 203 cm — the most common adult size in NZ homes. King (NZ/AU): 167 × 203 cm — this is narrower than the US king (193 × 203 cm). Super king: 183 × 203 cm — closest to the US king and the largest commonly available in NZ. Always verify dimensions on the specific retailer listing, as mattress sizes can vary slightly between brands.
Queen frames (153 cm wide) — the most popular adult size in New Zealand and the best fit for most standard bedrooms.
King beds from NZ retailers
NZ/AU king frames (167 cm wide) — for bedrooms with at least 3.2 m of clear width after walkway allowances.

Minimum room sizes for each bed
The standard recommended minimum for easy movement is 60 cm on each walkable side of the bed — enough to make the bed properly, walk through, and open a bedside drawer. With that rule applied: a queen bed (153 cm wide) needs a room at least 153 + 60 + 60 = 273 cm wide — call it 3 m minimum, and 3.3–3.6 m for comfort. An NZ king (167 cm) needs a room at least 3.2 m wide; a super king (183 cm) needs at least 3.4 m. These are clear-floor minimums — if wardrobes or dressers are on the side walls, start from the furniture face rather than the wall.
Length matters too. A queen or king mattress at 203 cm long, plus a 10–15 cm gap to the wall at the head and the foot of the bed, means you need a room depth of at least 2.3–2.4 m for a reasonable feel. Rooms under 3.6 × 3.6 m often work best with a queen rather than a king, particularly if the room has a wardrobe along one wall.
Bunk vs standard beds for kids rooms
A standard single at 92 cm wide needs a clear path on at least one side; a king single at 107 cm takes slightly more. In a narrow kids bedroom (2.7–3 m wide), a single frame fits, but a king single starts to pinch once a wardrobe and a desk are also in the room. Bunk beds stack two sleepers in roughly the footprint of one single or king single, which is why they are popular in New Zealand holiday baches and smaller bedrooms. The tradeoff: ceiling height must be at least 2.4 m for the top sleeper, and the ladder needs clear floor space beside it.
Walking space and practical planning
The 60 cm walkway rule is a minimum, not a comfortable living standard. For a master bedroom where two people get up at different times, 75–80 cm per side makes a real difference. For a kids room or spare room, 50 cm is liveable if the room is short. Remember that wardrobe doors need swing clearance (typically 55–65 cm for a hinged door) and that drawers on a dresser or bedside table also need space to open — usually 35–45 cm.
Key takeaways
The NZ king is 167 × 203 cm — narrower than a US king. A queen is the most popular NZ adult size and fits most standard-sized bedrooms. Allow at least 60 cm of walkway on each accessible side of the bed. For kids rooms under 3 m wide, consider a king single, a loft bed, or a bunk. Always verify mattress and frame dimensions on the specific retailer listing — sizing can vary between ranges.
