NZ bed sizes: king vs queen vs super king

NZ mattress dimensions explained - including why an NZ king differs from a US king. Room minimums, walkways, and beds that fit your bedroom.

NZ bed sizes are not US sizes: an NZ king is 167 cm wide, not a US king. Labelling varies, so use the centimetres. Here is every size you will see in NZ stores.

Queen beds from NZ retailers

Queen frames (153 cm wide) - the most popular adult size in New Zealand and the best fit for most standard bedrooms.

King beds from NZ retailers

NZ/AU king frames (167 cm wide) - for bedrooms with at least 3.2 m of clear width after walkway allowances.

Minimum room sizes for each bed

Allow 60 cm on each walkable side - enough to make the bed and open a drawer. A queen (153 cm) therefore wants about 2.7 m of clear width, more comfortably 3.3-3.6 m. An NZ king (167 cm) wants at least 3.2 m; a super king (183 cm) at least 3.4 m. Measure from the face of a wardrobe, not the wall behind it.

Aim for at least 60 cm of clear floor on every side you need to walk - measure from the face of a wardrobe or dresser, not the wall behind it.

Length matters too. A queen or king mattress at 203 cm long, plus a 10–15 cm gap to the wall at the head and the foot of the bed, means you need a room depth of at least 2.3–2.4 m for a reasonable feel. Rooms under 3.6 × 3.6 m often work best with a queen rather than a king, particularly if the room has a wardrobe along one wall.

Bunk vs standard beds for kids rooms

A standard single at 92 cm wide needs a clear path on at least one side; a king single at 107 cm takes slightly more. In a narrow kids bedroom (2.7–3 m wide), a single frame fits, but a king single starts to pinch once a wardrobe and a desk are also in the room. Bunk beds stack two sleepers in roughly the footprint of one single or king single, which is why they are popular in New Zealand holiday baches and smaller bedrooms. The tradeoff: ceiling height must be at least 2.4 m for the top sleeper, and the ladder needs clear floor space beside it.

Walking space and practical planning

The 60 cm walkway rule is a minimum, not a comfortable living standard. For a master bedroom where two people get up at different times, 75–80 cm per side makes a real difference. For a kids room or spare room, 50 cm is liveable if the room is short. Remember that wardrobe doors need swing clearance (typically 55–65 cm for a hinged door) and that drawers on a dresser or bedside table also need space to open - usually 35–45 cm.
