Storage baskets and boxes for NZ shelves, cupboards and wardrobes
How to measure a shelf, cupboard, cube, or mirrored bathroom cabinet, then choose baskets, lidded boxes, and bins from NZ retailers that fit the opening.

This guide is for the containers that live on shelves and inside cupboards: baskets, lidded boxes, and bins. It covers cube shelves, wardrobe and linen shelves, open bookcases, and mirrored bathroom cabinets. The shortlists pull photo-led pieces from NZ retailers, with at most two from any one shop.
A mirrored wall cabinet above the basin is one of those shelves, and a shallow one. The same measuring habit works for a linen cupboard or a cube unit. Write three numbers in centimetres, then search with those numbers.

Measure the opening
Use a steel tape on the empty shelf. Record the clear width between the sides, the clear depth from the back panel to the front lip or the closed door, and the clear height up to the next shelf or the top of the cabinet. Hinge arms and glass-shelf clips often take a centimetre or two, so measure the gap a box can actually sit in.

Choose by what you store
Pick the container from the things that will live in it. Folded clothes want a basket or a lidded box on the shelf. Toys want a cube-sized basket you can pull out. Books and paper want a low basket or an archive box. Shoes want a shoe box. Makeup wants a low organiser.

Choose by the space
Cube shelves. A cube opening is often about 33 × 33 cm, and some units are closer to 30 cm. Leave a little clearance so the basket slides out. The cube shortlist keeps baskets, bins, and boxes about 25-36 cm wide and deep, and up to about 33 cm tall. The Mocka Byron Stripe Cube Basket and the Mocka Felt Cube Basket sit in that band, and so does a rope basket of the same footprint, such as the Storage Box Pastiche rope basket at 31 cm. A clear bin such as the Kmart 16L Clear Open Front Bin fits the same sort of opening, and so does the IKEA KUGGIS box with lid, white, 26 × 35 × 15 cm (about 35 cm wide, 26 cm deep, and 15 cm high). IKEA sells that box with lid in other footprints too, including 13 × 18 × 8 cm and 37 × 54 × 21 cm.
Wardrobe and linen shelves. A wardrobe shelf is often about 45-55 cm deep, with 30-40 cm of height under the next shelf or the hanging rail. A basket such as a Storage Box Pastiche rope basket holds folded clothes and linen. The larger KUGGIS box with lid, 37 × 54 × 21 cm, is about 54 cm wide, 37 cm deep, and 21 cm high, so measure the shelf before you assume a 50 cm depth. The lidded shortlist includes the Kmart 18L Rectangle Trellis Basket with Lid, about 39 × 27 × 22 cm, plus the IKEA FJÄDERHARV and SMARRA boxes with lids.
Open bookcases. The basket is part of the room. Seagrass, hyacinth, and paper rope read well on an open shelf: the Kmart Square Seagrass Woven Basket, the Solace Hyacinth Arrow Weave Basket from Bed Bath & Beyond, and Storage Box Pastiche rope baskets are that kind of piece. A clear tub is easier to live with inside a cupboard.
Mirrored bathroom cabinets
A mirrored wall cabinet above the basin is a shallow shelf. Retail units across NZ commonly run about 110-160 mm external depth: IKEA GODMORGON about 140 mm, Plumbing World Capri and Anya and many Mitre 10 or Bunnings Mondella cabinets about 150 mm, Clearlite Mahia about 130 mm, and Code Pavia 600 about 120 mm. Usable internal depth is tighter. Plumbing World's Anya 1200 lists 105 mm internal on a 150 mm-deep unit, so plan on about 100-130 mm of clear shelf depth once the door, back panel, and shelf clips are in place.
A single door is often 400-600 mm wide (Clearlite Mahia, Plumbline Mia 450, Mondella 450 and 600). A 750-1200 mm cabinet splits into bays of about 300-400 mm. With two adjustable shelves in a cabinet about 600-800 mm tall, the openings often land around 150-300 mm high. The compact band below plans for a 34 × 11 × 25 cm opening. The wider band plans for about 50 × 13 × 28 cm.

Pieces that fit the compact depth include the Storage Box Acrylic Cosmetic Organiser Curved, about 27 × 10 × 8 cm, and the Shut the Front Door Fuji Small Storage Box, about 20 × 10 × 12.5 cm. The wider band fits the IKEA HUMLESJÖN basket with suction cup, about 26 × 13 × 7 cm, and a shallow KUGGIS box with lid, 13 × 18 × 8 cm, about 18 cm wide and 13 cm deep. A deeper vanity cupboard is a different opening: measure it and use the cupboard-bin shortlist.
Materials
Natural: seagrass, hyacinth, rattan, and paper rope. Use these on open shelves in living rooms and bedrooms, where the basket is on show. The Kmart seagrass basket and the Solace hyacinth basket are examples.
Fabric and felt: cube shelves, kids rooms, and wardrobe shelves. Soft sides, light to lift. The Mocka Felt Cube Basket and the Storage Box Pastiche rope baskets sit here, along with Kmart's moulded felt and linen-weave baskets.
Clear: cupboards and wardrobe shelves, when you want to see what is inside. The Kmart 16L Clear Open Front Bin and the IKEA KUGGIS box with lid, in a few footprints, are the useful end of this range. A small clear box such as the Kmart Small Storage Box, about 21 × 10 × 4 cm, also fits a shallow bathroom shelf.
Shortlists
Each shortlist requires a photo and keeps at most two products from one retailer. If your shelf differs, search with your own measurements. The button at the end prefills 80 × 50 × 35 cm for a wardrobe shelf, or 34 × 11 × 25 cm for a compact mirror cabinet.
