Choosing a bed: storage is your friend

Before buying anything, sketch your room on grid paper (or use a free floor plan app on your phone). Note every door swing, window position, wardrobe alcove, and any awkward angles. Mark where the light switch and power points are — these often constrain where furniture can go. In a small bedroom, getting the layout right on paper prevents the expensive discovery that a wardrobe blocks a door or a bed blocks a window.

In a small bedroom, the bed should do more than one job. Beds with drawers underneath (often called storage beds or divan bases) replace a chest of drawers without adding any extra footprint. A platform bed with deep under-bed clearance (30–35 cm) works with flat storage boxes. Headboards with shelves or USB points replace bedside tables if floor space is truly at a premium. In a room under about 9 m², a king single (107 × 203 cm) is often a better choice than a double (138 × 188 cm) — it is actually longer, almost as comfortable for one adult, and leaves noticeably more floor space.

Wardrobes: tall vs wide for small rooms

Going tall rather than wide is the key insight for small bedroom storage. A wardrobe that is 200 cm tall but only 80 cm wide uses the same floor area as a chest of drawers but provides vastly more storage. In many small NZ bedrooms, running two or three narrow tall units side by side gives the same capacity as a single wide wardrobe while being easier to manoeuvre into the room. Check that hinged doors have clearance to open — a door that swings 55–60 cm into the room is often the binding constraint. Sliding-door wardrobes avoid this problem entirely, though they cannot be accessed from both ends simultaneously.

Fitted and semi-fitted wardrobe systems from NZ stores (IKEA PAX is the obvious choice, but Mocka and other local retailers have modular options) can work in awkward alcoves and under sloped ceilings where freestanding units cannot go.
