A bedroom under 10 square metres - about 2.8 × 3.5 m or a slightly larger but awkward shape - is one of the most common challenges in New Zealand housing stock. Older villas often have one or two compact bedrooms, new townhouses stack bedrooms to save floor area, and apartments regularly feature rooms that feel generous until you add a wardrobe and a desk. The good news: small bedrooms work well when you treat every decision as a dimension problem, not a style problem.

Measure and map your room first

Before buying anything, sketch your room on grid paper (or use a free floor plan app on your phone). Note every door swing, window position, wardrobe alcove, and any awkward angles. Mark where the light switch and power points are - these often constrain where furniture can go. In a small bedroom, getting the layout right on paper prevents the expensive discovery that a wardrobe blocks a door or a bed blocks a window.

Choosing a bed: storage is your friend

In a small bedroom, the bed should do more than one job. Beds with drawers underneath (often called storage beds or divan bases) replace a chest of drawers without adding any extra footprint.
