A keep, donate, and store method for one shelf at a time, with NZ baskets, boxes, bins, and organisers for clothes, toys, books, shoes, and makeup.

Declutter one zone at a time: a single drawer, one wardrobe shelf, one cube, or the bathroom cabinet. Finish that zone before you open the next one. The containers below are indoor storage from NZ retailers: baskets, boxes, bins, and organisers for shelves and cupboards.

Keep, donate, store
Empty the zone onto the bed or the floor. Make three piles. Keep what you use in a normal week. Donate what is in good condition and no longer yours to use. Store what is out of season, or what you will want again and cannot use this month. Bag the donate pile and take it out of the room the same day.
Measure the opening the keep pile will return to: width, depth, and the gap above it, in centimetres. Then choose a container that fits that opening. A basket that is proud of the shelf will be the first thing you stop using.
Clothes
Start with one drawer. Fold what you keep and line it with a drawer organiser so the piles stay put. The Kmart 12 Grids Linen Look Adjustable Drawer Organiser and The Warehouse Living & Co Linen-Look Adjustable Drawer Organiser are sized for a typical drawer.
Then one wardrobe shelf. A basket such as a Storage Box Pastiche rope basket holds tees and linen on the shelf. On an open shelf, choose a basket you are happy to look at: the Kmart Square Seagrass Woven Basket, or the Solace Hyacinth Arrow Weave Basket from Bed Bath & Beyond. A hanging organiser uses the door: the Kmart Multi Pocket Hanging Organiser and the Kmart Door Hanging Organiser are made for that. Check the hanging length on the listing, then leave the rail for clothes that stay on hangers.
Out-of-season clothes go under the bed, in a low box. The Kmart Linen Look Underbed Storage Box and the Storage Box Taurus Underbed Storage Box are the shape of that gap. Measure the clear height under the bed frame before you order, and keep the box low enough to slide.
Toys
One cube, or one corner of the living room. Keep the toys that are played with this month in a basket that slides out of a cube shelf. The Mocka Byron Stripe Cube Basket and the Mocka Felt Cube Basket are about 30 cm square, which suits a common cube opening. A lidded box of a similar footprint hides the rest on a higher shelf.
Work through toys by type: blocks in one basket, soft toys in another, puzzles in a lidded box. When a cube is full, that type is full. Donate the overflow before you add another unit.
Books and paper
Books you are reading can stand on the shelf. The overflow, and the kids' picture books, sit better in a low basket so the shelf still looks finished. The Mocka Little Paper House Book Storage Basket is made for that. Paper, school work, and manuals go in an archive box such as The Warehouse Impact Archive Box, or a file organiser such as the TSB Living 6 Tier Mesh File Organizer, on a desk or a cupboard shelf.
Shoes
Keep the pairs you wear this week by the door, and box the rest. The IKEA SKUBB shoe box and the IKEA MURVEL shoe organiser stack on a wardrobe floor or a low shelf. Match the box height to the shoes: a flat pair needs less than a boot. Measure the wardrobe floor depth so the stack sits inside the closed door.
Makeup and accessories
One bathroom shelf or one dressing-table drawer. Daily skincare and makeup go in a low organiser such as the Storage Box Acrylic Cosmetic Organiser Curved, about 27 × 10 × 8 cm, which also fits a shallow mirror cabinet. Jewellery that you want in a box goes in a small lidded box such as the Shut the Front Door Ashley Jewellery Box. Put the rest in a cupboard.
