Guide notes
A dining table that is slightly too big ruins a room. Chairs that cannot pull out properly, people squeezing past to get to the kitchen, no space to put anything on the table once the food arrives — it is a very specific kind of frustrating. Getting the size right before you buy is mostly about one rule: chair clearance.

Allow at least 90 cm from the edge of the table to any wall or furniture on each side where chairs will pull out. This gives enough room to push the chair back and stand up comfortably. For a comfortable dining room where people walk behind seated guests, 100–110 cm is better. In a really tight space, 80 cm is the hard minimum — below that and people are effectively climbing out sideways.
So for a 1.8 m table in a dining room: 90 cm of clearance each side means the room needs to be at least 1.8 + 0.9 + 0.9 = 3.6 m in one direction. For a 1.2 m round table with 90 cm clearance: 1.2 + 0.9 + 0.9 = 3.0 m. This is why many New Zealand homes that look like they could fit a six-seater actually live better with a four-seater or a compact extension table.
Rectangular tables are the most space-efficient seating-per-square-metre: you can push them against a wall for everyday use and pull them out for hosting. Round and oval tables are better in small square rooms — there are no corners to catch people on, and they can feel more social. A 1.0 m round table seats four adults comfortably (800–900 mm per person is the comfortable minimum). An oval is a nice middle ground — no sharp corners, and you can often seat an extra person at the end.
For small NZ kitchens and open-plan units, a round table around 90–100 cm diameter or a rectangular table around 120 × 80 cm is usually the sweet spot for four people without dominating the space. Anything much bigger starts to feel like the table is the room.
A rough guide: allow 600 mm of table edge per seated person for comfortable dining. This means: a 120 cm table seats 2 on each long side (4 total); a 150 cm table seats 4–6 (2–3 per side); a 180 cm table seats 6–8; a 200 cm table seats 6–8 easily, 10 at a stretch. Round: 90 cm diameter seats 3–4; 120 cm seats 4–6. These are comfortable numbers — you can technically squeeze in more, but the dining experience suffers.
Extension (extendable) tables are a popular solution in smaller New Zealand homes — they live compact for everyday use and expand when you host. Common formats include butterfly extension (leaf stored inside), self-storing extension, and separate added leaves. The key question is what the compact size is — if the everyday size is still too big for the room, an extension table does not help much. Always measure the table at its smallest configuration first, then check whether the extended size works for your largest typical gathering.
Tables up to 140 cm long — compact enough to leave proper chair clearance in most NZ dining rooms and kitchen-dining areas, sorted narrowest first.

Key takeaways
Allow at least 90 cm from table edge to wall or furniture on every chair-pull side. Choose shape based on your room shape — round and oval work well in small square rooms. Allow 600 mm of table edge per seated person. For hosting flexibility, an extension table in the right compact size can work well. Always verify dimensions on the retailer listing — always measure your specific product, as dimensions can vary between configurations and finishes.
